Learning to surf on your own can be extremely frustrating and discouraging. Fortunately there are plenty of places to learn how to ride the waves that break so well on Del Mar's beaches.
Surf schools started to become popular in the 70's. One of the first was Doc Pascowitz's surf camps to Baja. He advertised in Surfer Magazine, which I subscribed to for decades.
Doc and his large surfing family would take a motor home with their students from Orange County down to Baja California, Mexico for a week and teach kids how to surf.
It always sounded like a great way to learn to surf - and having a medical doctor as the host was probably a great comfort to most of their student's moms.
Since that time, many former professionals and surfing entrepreneurs have started local surf schools all over the world.
There are a large number of them in and around Del Mar.
A Del Mar Surf School
A very cool company that goes beyond simple surf lessons is Fulcrum Surf of Del Mar. While they do use professional trainers to teach surfing, they provide programs for out of water training and exercise as well. Dan Mori has been running Fulcrum Surf since 2003 as well as teaching surfing at Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest High Schools.
